Sabri Modalal Heritage Folklore Group
The Sabri Modalal Heritage Folklore Group is one of the oldest groups in Syria performing musical art in the traditional way.
Founded in 1954 as the Folkloric Band, its name was changed to honor its founder, Sabri Modalal, who retired in 2001.
Mohamed Hamadyeh took responsibility for administering the band in 1985, and helped shape the group’s performance and style, pleasing audiences and critics alike.
Today, the Sabri Modalal Heritage Folklore Group is known throughout the Arab World and beyond. Its reputation and fan base have grown due to its professional, spirited performances at leading festivals, music conferences, and on international tours to Austria, Belgium, Britain, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hong Kong, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia, and United Arab Emirates. Along the way, the group has won several awards, which have helped promote Middle Eastern music to a still wider audience.
The Sabri Modalal Heritage Folklore Group is actually made up of three groups, each with its own style:
The Vocal Ensemble counts among its members some of the most beautiful voices in Syria. It performs Muashahat compositions, Qudoud songs, popular songs, poems, folkloric songs, and religious and mystic chants.
The Derwish Band accompanies the famous whirling Sufi mystics with religious and mystic chants.
The Eastern Orchestra performs Middle Eastern pieces, richly melodic and evocative of this ancient land and its culture.
It is a great pleasure and an honour for this group to play a part in keeping alive the Middle Eastern musical tradition, so that local and international audiences can come to appreciate the true beauty of this land, its culture, and its people.
